Escape Tools

Inmates have got lots of time on their hands.
What better way to make use of this resource
than doing handicrafts?
Creativity pays, especially when it facilitates
escape. These examples bear witness to man’s
love of freedom.

Ingenuity within prison walls.

A Reporter at Large: The Interpreter: Reporting & Essays: The New Yorker

Fascinating linguistics article from a couple of years ago about a tribe who don't talk about things that happened a couple of years ago.

final flight

Our pilot from Amsterdam to Houston was on his final flight as a commercial airline pilot. His family was along for the ride. The flight crew passed out a flyer recognizing the pilot's career, and advising us not to be concerned about the water cannon salute upon our arrival. Our captain landed in pretty rough weather, and everybody on the plane clapped for him. They sprayed the plane when we were rolling to the terminal. It was cool.

Then we boarded the flight to Austin, and the pilot came on to advise us that the body of a fallen US soldier from Iraq was on the plane for return to his family, and that upon our arrival, there would be a water cannon salute and an honor guard to receive the body. When the plane landed, we rolled beneath the spray of the water cannon and stopped at the terminal. We all stayed seated while the honor guard helped the family take their son away. Fifty motorcycles followed the hearse off the airport grounds.
